The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority (RSCVA) is pleased to announce the United States Bowling Congress 108th Open Championships is underway at the National Bowling Stadium in downtown Reno.
The 2011 tournament will draw more than 12,500 teams representing more than 62,000 bowlers from across the country. Additionally, more than 32,500 guests will visit Reno Tahoe throughout the tournament, which runs through July 2nd. The economic impact of the anticipated 94,500 visitors to the destination is projected to be nearly $96 million.
“The 2011 USBC Open Championships return to Reno Tahoe is the first time, in the tournament’s century-long history, that it is being held in the same destination in back-to-back years,” said RSCVA Acting President/CEO Joe Kelley. “This is the largest participatory sporting event in the world,” Kelley added, “The community couldn’t be more excited for the bowlers to come back to town, and we certainly hope they enjoy their time here.”
The 2011 event will mark the tournament’s record 10th trip to Reno Tahoe, and its seventh visit to the National Bowling Stadium. During the nine previous tournaments in Reno Tahoe, 121,105 teams (more than 605,000 bowlers) have competed for more than $34 million in prize money. More than 600,000 games will be bowled during the event. More than 100 million pins will be knocked down over the course of the tournament. Competition takes place daily, for 122 consecutive days, from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m.
“Over the years, our numbers have shown that the bowlers really enjoy Reno,” said USBC Championships Director Brian Lewis. “Reno has become a home away from home for USBC and our tournaments.”
The only facility of its kind in the world, the National Bowling Stadium is dedicated to the sport of bowling. Opening in 1995, the Los Angeles Times called it the “Taj Mahal of Tenpins.” Living up to its name, the Stadium was elegantly designed with the tournament bowler in mind. |
