The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS: www.bts.gov<http://www.bts.gov/> ) released its 4Q10 data, which publishes the average fares for the U.S. and the top 100 airports within it.  Here's the quick rundown as it relates to RNO:

  • The average roundtrip fare nationwide was $337, a 5.2% increase over 4Q09.
  • RNO ranked 80 out of the top 100, with an average fare of $294, or 12.6% lower than the national average.
  • In addition, RNO's fares only increased 2.7% over 4Q09, half the national increase.
  • Sacramento (SMF) ranked 62nd, with an average of $315 (7.2% higher than RNO), with a YOY increase of 9.4%.
  • The most expensive airport in the U.S. was Newark ($461); the least was Atlantic City ($156...due to the heavy presence of Spirit Airlines, the ancillary revenue "leader", which are not included in fares).
